Alaskan-Yukon Expedition

In March 2010, Andrew Skurka began a 4,700 mile, 7-month-long ski/trek/packraft adventure that begins and ends thirty miles north of the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska. This expedition has never before been completed or attempted.  About 24 percent (1,150 miles) of the distance will be covered on skis; about 28 percent (1,300 miles) will be covered in a packraft; and the final 48 percent (2,250 miles) will be covered on foot.

Andrew needs to average about 25 miles per day, including delays related to weather.  He plans on averaging 40-60 miles per day along rivers, 30-40 miles per day on established winter tracks, and 25-30 miles per day while off trail hiking and bushwhacking.

Andrew's gear is an incredibly light 18-20 ounce base weight.  He averages 4,700 calories a day, mostly consisting of quick/no preparation bars and snacks.
